Throughout our lives our subconscious mind is programmed through daily experiences and observations that are continuously interpreted and stored by us. On the basis of this, we live, we do, we think... The subconscious mind is actually the basis of all our emotions, perceptions, ideas and our self-image. It contains all the information with which we think, reason, experience, feel, and with which our bodies present themselves. It therefore stands to reason that this is also the source of harmful behaviours which can quickly lead to negative experiences and patterns that constantly reinforce these behaviours.  The result can be a quick decent into a negative and destructive downward spiral.

  

Changing these 'programmed' ideas, beliefs, emotions and behavioural patterns can be slow and difficult going during everyday life. Because, although initially, willpower sometimes can achieve something quickly, the prolonged application of willpower is exhausting and usually unsuccessful. As the core of the problem is not addressed and changes made will not come from the inside using willpower alone, there is always that little voice in the back of your head that tells you that you're worthless... or what you do, you don’t do well... or if you want to smoke, to just have that one cigarette in any case, regardless of the fact that it is bad for you... or maybe to have an extra cookie despite all the promises you made to yourself not to...

  

That voice is your subconscious. It is the expression of your negative thoughts, negative beliefs or emotions you're still hold deep within you and which often express themselves in harmful behaviours.

 

A hypnotherapist is in a unique position to effectively and directly deal with the subconscious in a manner that nobody else can. Hypnotherapy has two important advantages over other psychological approaches: 

  • Hypnotherapy deals directly with the subconscious mind and,
  • Hypnotherapy is usually much faster in producing positive changes and results (read more about it here)

Even though hypnosis and hypnotherapy are tremendous tools in the arsenal of a therapist, there are still many, many misconceptions and myths surrounding hypnosis. Below is a brief summary for both therapists and clients explaining what hypnosis and hypnotherapy are, its benefits and things that clients should know about it before they begin hypnotherapy treatments.

 

Why Hypnosis?

  • Your subconscious mind is 30,000 times more powerful than your conscious mind
  • Hypnosis and hypnotherapy works faster and is more effective than other forms of psychological therapies
  • Hypnosis and hypnotherapy is non-invasive
  • Hypnosis and hypnotherapy helps to improve and deepen sleep
  • Hypnosis and hypnotherapy causes a general improvement in stress and anxiety responses, even if it was not the focus of treatment
  • Hypnosis and hypnotherapy changes negative feelings into positive perceptions

What do I have to know?

  • Do not expect to get a hypnotized feeling
  • Expect deep relaxation
  • Trance is not the same as sleeping or being unconscious
  • Trance is a natural state and anyone has experienced in the one or other form
  • You always have control
  • All hypnosis is a form of self-hypnosis
  • Trance is about learning to go into a trance - the more you do it the more successful, easier and deeper the trance process will be.

About me

I'm Lieze Boshoff, Transpersonal- and Hypnotherapist, and owner of Praktijk Holistica. I obtained a Bachelors in Clinical Psychology and a Master's degree in Neuropsychology. I have also been trained in Diagnosis and Intervention for Clinical Psychology, Development Models, Hypnotherapy (Master), Reiki II, Aromatherapy and Reflexology. After I completed my studies, I worked as a PhD candidate and lecturer at the University of Groningen where, through a series of events and experiences, I rediscovered my first love – to help people on the mental, physical and spiritual level and thus, affect real and lasting healing and wellness within the individual. I say rediscovered because, even as a first-year student experiencing the painful journey of recovery from cancer my mother went through, I wanted to start my own holistic healing and wellness practice, specializing in holistic and complementary treatments aimed specifically for cancer patients. Therefore, I decided to finally pursue my dreams, my intuition and my heart, and thus Praktijk Holistica was born.
